Engineering Institute for Young Women

On July 13th, 2012, Center for Earthquake Engineering Simulation’s Dr. Inthuorn Sasanakul hosted a presentation about earthquake engineering to a group of about 20 high-school-aged girls.¬† These girls were part of an RPI-wide event called Engineering Institute for Young Women.

Engineering Institute for Young Women is a week long camp held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to engage female students from local area high schools in engineering activities. Broadly the main goals of the program are: (i) to expose middle and high school students to Engineering through hands-on design activities under the guidance of faculty advisors and undergraduate students; (ii) to give them the opportunity to work in teams; (iii) to learn the engineering design process; (iv) to educate students to get a first-hand knowledge of how engineering design relates to solving real-world engineering problems and to raise their awareness and interest in Engineering disciplines, (v) to attract students (particularly minorities and underrepresented groups) to pursue a career in Engineering.
