NEES Centrifuge Workshop 2011

WorkshopaRPI hosted the 7th Annual NEES Centrifuge Research and Training Workshop, organized jointly by RPI and UCDavis on May 16th and 17th. A total of 16 researchers participated in this workshop.

The first day of the workshop included lab tours and lectures that allowed participants to explore and understand the capabilities of the centrifuge facilities and research opportunities using the NEES equipment (in-flight robot, 1D and 2D shakers, split container/shaker, and advanced instrumentation). The goals of the first day were to help participants prepare NEESR/NSF proposals, introduce them to the NEES data repository, and prepare them to plan research using this advance equipment once they receive funding. The workshop included presentations by centrifuge experts from RPI and UC Davis Centrifuge Facilities, as well as outside researchers.

First-day presentation topics included:

  1. Tarek Abdoun: Introduction to Centrifuge Modeling and Scaling Law (PDF) (Recording)
  2. Dan Wilson: Overview of UCD Centrifuge Facility (PDF) (Recording)
  3. Mourad Zeghal: Advance Site Monitoring and Characterization of Site Dynamic Properties (PDF) (Recording)
  4. Inthuorn Sasanakul: Overview of RPI Centrifuge Facility (PDF) (Recording)
  5. Scott Brandenberg: A Recent Example of a Difficult Project Management Approach (PDF) (Recording)
  6. Scott Olson: Measuring Pressure in the Geotechnical Centrifuge Using Tactile Pressure Pads (PDF) (Recording)
  7. D. Wilson and I. Sananakul: NEESR Proposal, Planning, and Budgeting. Sananakul (PDF) Wilson (PDF)
  8. RPI Staff: Planning & Managing Centrifuge Experiment at RPI (PDF)
  9. Ross Boulanger: Liquefaction effects – Designing tests to identify mechanisms (PDF) (Recording)

The second day of the workshop included demonstrations of NEES equipment. Two sessions covered several topics:

  • Session A:
    1. Centrifuge and robot operations at high G
    2. Shakers
      John Lawler’s slides: (PDF)
    3. Split containers
  • Session B:
    1. Centrifuge model preparation
    2. Introduction to sensors and RPI DAQ software
    3. Demonstration of advance sensor
    4. Demonstration of the high-speed camera.
      Eric Johanssen’s slides: (PDF)
